Where does the Western wedding ceremony come from ?
The Flower girl, the words of officiation, the best man, all sorts of other traditions common in modern Western weddings.
The majority of the wedding ceremony is set by what was popular in England. Many traditions are medieval in origin (bridesmaids, groomsmen, garter, bouquet).
The white wedding dress was set by Queen Victoria during her reign 1837-1901.
As the US was an English colony, many of the colonist were English so many of our customs are English in origin.
Of course the words are based on the relgiion itself--Catholics having their mass long before Protestants. If there are any traditions in particular you are curious about, do a yahoo search on it.
