In a post apocalyptic world...?

We have such a myriad of tools and products. I was wondering today which of these products would come in handy in a post apocalyptic world where digital technology simply does not exist.
I thought a musical instrument, bikes, pens, books, chess pieces, and survival and hunting gear (knives, fire, compass, fishing line, the works) would be enough.
A world where digital technology is not present would be something wouldn't it? i read an excerpt from 2012 and it got me thinking about how reliant we are on digital technology and material posessions. Any thoughts?

We as a society are losing basic skills that are necessary to survive without modern technology.

Who you vote for in 2008 impacts 2012.

Honestly, that's still pretty overpriced. There are cheaper ways to get these things if you do your research.

Do you really WANT all of these things? None of these items are mandatory. If you really want to save money, I would just skip them entirely. None would be missed if you didn't have them.

Still, if you want them, let me suggest other ways to get them:

Visit some thrift shops and see what you can find. I've seen tons of baskets in thrift shops.

Look on Craigslist and eBay. Lots of brides buy these things for their weddings - and when the wedding's over and they discover that they have no further use, they try to get rid of them for deep discounts.

Craft stores and Walmart usually have all these items. Many dollar stores have them as well.

You don't need a special pen for the guestbook. You can wrap a regular pen in ribbon if you want something "pretty," although nobody will notice or care what kind of pen you use. A simple blank scrapbook can serve as a nice guestbook. Or have guests sign something interesting like a platter, coffee table book, etc.

A ring bearer pillow can be made quite cheaply if you have some spare fabric and a sewing machine. Do you know someone who sews?

Do you have any recently married friends who can loan you these items? Or do your family members still have these things? It would be a lovely sentiment to borrow something from a happily married couple, plus it's absolutely free.

You can find or request handmade items on Etsy.com, like the pillow and garter.

Have you had a bridal shower yet? Is your wedding after your birthday or Christmas/Hanukkah? If not, wait and see what you might get. I received the toasting flutes and cake cutting set as shower and Christmas gifts.

Does the reception hall have any of these items? Our reception hall had flutes and a cake set we could borrow if we didn't bring our own. Also a birdcage for cards.

Do NOT use just any pen!
If you use a pen that is NOT photo-safe, your lovely engagement picture will suffer!
Go to your photographer, local frame shop, craft store or even some of the larger retailers (think Target) and look in their craft section for a photo-safe pen.
I have two quick stories to share:
1) a friend of mine used this same idea. One of the guests had a drink or two too many and wrote some LARGE and profane items on their beautiful photo matte. No way they were displaying that in thier home!
2) My husband and I did it too, but didn't have any problems! We didn't serve alcohol (for religious reasons) at our reception!
My point: If you do this, think very carefully about your guest list. If there is someone there you think has the potential to ruin this for you - skip the idea.
But trust me on the pen - go get a photo-safe one.
